Jubilee Government to Sponsor 3-Day Shopping Spree in Mombasa

Residents of Mombasa County are set to enjoy a three-day shopping spree sponsored by President Uhuru Kenyatta's government at the Visa Oshwal Grounds starting from May 5.

The initiative will give Kenyans an opportunity to purchase designer wear from labels such as Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Victoria's Secret from as low as Sh 100 with the most expensive item going for Sh600.

The Mombasa event comes just a month after another sale in Nairobi that attracted thousands of buyers.

The move was launched by the Ministry of Industrialization & Enterprise Development as an avenue to promote the local textile industry through the Export Processing Zones (EPZ).

The Ministry also indicated that the same sale would take place in cities and towns countrywide.

According to the Ministry, EPZ is a major driver of Kenya's economy with a total of about Sh74 Billion in investments and has employed over 50,000 people.

President Kenyatta, during his Labour Day speech on Monday, indicated that the government was committed to improving the local textile industry in the country.

He further urged Kenyans to support the industry and stop buying second-hand clothes commonly referred to as "mitumba" and instead buy new ones manufactured locally.
