Jubilee Party Issues Conditions for Participation in Kenya's 2017 Presidential Debate

President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee Party on Wednesday issued a statement on the Presidential debate stating that media houses in charge of organising the event should ensure that all candidates are briefed and agree with the process before holding the debate.

The ruling party urged the organisers to ensure that they get input from all participants and agree on criteria for conducting the date, the rules of engagement and all the important dates to make the debate effective.

Jubilee further explained that the debate would only be successful if all parties are engaged in all stages of planning the event.

"To ensure a balanced and transport high-quality debates that Kenyans deserve and which are devoid of any pollution of bias, rules, and methods of engagement, including the dates, must be agreed by candidates before making any announcement," the statement read in part.

Earlier this week, media houses announced that they would jointly host two debates for 18 aspirants running for the presidency in July.

Speaking at a press conference at the Radisson Blu Hotel, the Organising Committee Chairman on presidential debates, Wachira Waruru, revealed that the debates would be held on July 10 and 24 adding at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. All the debates are scheduled to kick off at 7.30pm.

Waruru also stated that presidential running mates will also have their own debate on the 17th of July.

This would be the second Presidential debate in the country following a previous debate that was held in February 2013.
