Jubilee Ready to Amend Election Laws After Uhuru's Assent

Jubilee has expressed readiness to amend the contentious Election Laws (Amendment) Bill that was passed by the Senate but only once assented by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Addressing a press conference at Parliament Buildings, Senate Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki highlighted that there was room for changes to be made before the August 8 General Election.

According to Kindiki, the passing of the Bill, which allows the IEBC to have a manual voter identification backup, was fast-tracked to allow the polls body to adequately prepare for the upcoming election.

“Laws can be revisited or relooked. It is not an end in itself. There is nothing that prevents amendments being done on the laws once operational. We had to balance between the need to give certainty on matters of election,” said Kindiki.

Noting that the IEBC had previously complained over delays in preparation for the polls, Kindiki added: “I will not be surprised if such amendments start as soon as possible.”

During the same presser, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen dismissed the notion that the government had a fishy motive in passing the Bill adding that any changes were always welcome.

“Parliament is dynamic and people are dynamic. Even next week if a better idea comes up we shall amend the law,” indicated Murkomen.

On Friday, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka urged Kenyatta to consider the unity of the country before signing the Bill.

“I want to urge the President not to drink from the poisonous chalice. He must reject this bad law in the interest of peace and for the good of our country,” Musyoka stated.
