KANU Might Join NASA - Gideon Moi Says

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi on Friday made an announcement that is set to spark anxiety in the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Jubilee camp.

Gideon, who is the KANU chairman, announced that the decision on whether his party will join the National Super Alliance (NASA) would be decided by KANU delegates soon.

The former President's son was addressing a public forum where he received Senator Paul Njoroge who recently defected from the Jubilee Party.

His sentiments come barely a week after details emerged that Kenyatta had called Gideon and pleaded with him not to join NASA, which is being championed by the Opposition led by Raila Odinga and Musalia Mudavadi.

In the said call, Kenyatta assured the younger Moi that his interests were well taken care of by the ruling coalition and urged him to stick to the agreement signed by KANU and Jubilee after the 2013 Elections.

"KANU respects its obligations and until the expiry of the agreement, we are not in a hurry to get into another political agreement. As far as I am concerned, KANU will honour the existing pact for now," Moi announced after the President's call.

The call seemed to have appealed to Gideon until Friday's announcement which indicates that there was a possibility that KANU would join NASA.

Meanwhile, Mudavadi, who has been pushing for the formation of NASA had been courting Gideon with the promise that he would be one of the two deputies if he joined the alliance.

The Super alliance between the Opposition leaders seems to be giving Kenyatta sleepless nights thus compelling him to personally call the KANU Chairman.

If Moi agrees to join NASA, Kenyatta's re-election in the upcoming General Election could suffer a major setback as Rift Valley is considered a Jubilee stronghold.
