Kenyan Trends on January 26

Here are the trending topics in Kenya on Thursday.

Kathwana

Kathwana is an area in Tharaka Nithi County.

It got on the Kenyan trends after President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was in the area, declared it the County headquarters ending a row that started after Deputy President William Ruto named Chuka as the headquarters.

#UhuruTenaTharakaNithi

This hashtag began trending in the afternoon ahead of President Uhuru Kenyatta's visit to Tharaka Nithi County on Thursday.

Kenyatta was to visit the area for a voter mobilisation campaign that would begin with a stopover at Gatunga market before proceeding to Kathwana, Magutuni, Marimanti, Chuka University shopping centre, Mitheru and finally Chuka Town.

Earlier in the day, the President was in Marsabit.

Education CS Matiang'i

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i made his way to the online trends as he was meeting officials of the lecturers and non-teaching staff in public universities over their ongoing strike.

During the meeting Dr Matiang'i asked the UASU, KUSU & KUDHEIHA leaders to suspend the strike until March 1 as talks over their pay rise dispute continue.

The officials, however, expressed displeasure with the talks indicating that they would have to meet with their committees before making a formal announcement on Friday whether the strike would be halted.

#MaragaStrategicPlan

This topic was on the trends since Chief Justice David Maraga was launching his strategic plan at the Supreme Court.

CJ Maraga was set to outline measures he will undertake to clear the backlog of cases while ensuring integrity in service delivery.

At the same event, the new Chief Justice would indicate how he will leverage on the use of technology for service delivery as well as outline how he would ensure focus on high performance by judicial and non-judicial staff, accountability and the independence of the Judiciary.

#DaktariMmetuchocha

Kenyans on social media on Thursday began a conversation under the hashtag #DaktariMmetuchocha to express frustration over the prolonged doctors’ strike.

The debate was prompted by a decision by the Employment and Labour Relations Court to further extend the period for the medics and government to continue negotiating.

Judge Hellen Wasilwa gave the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union five more days to continue talks with the government.

On January 12, the Judge handed the KMPDU officials a one-month jail term and suspended it for two weeks to allow them participate in talks aimed at solving the stalemate.

The period, however, elapsed with no amicable solution having been reached.

The strike is now on its 53rd day.

Relief for 7 KMPDU Official

This topic emerged on the social media trends after Judge Hellen Wasilwa deferred the jail sentence handed to seven officials the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) by five days.

The officials now have until January 31, to negotiate with the government and call off the strike.
