Eliud Kipchoge sparked excitement after he ran the fastest marathon in the history of the event on Saturday morning.

Kipchoge finished the race in a time of 2:00:25 in the Nike Breaking 2 Race, a race organised and sponsored by Nike, and aimed at an aim of recording the fastest time of less than 2 hours.

The new record sparked excitement on Twitter with netizens congratulating the Olympic gold medalist for the huge achievement.

Leading the celebrations was President Uhuru Kenyatta who tweeted: "Well done @Eliud Kipchoge for running the fastest marathon ever, 2:00:23. Your dedication & hard work is an inspiration to us all."

Other who took the moment to commend the athlete is popular sports journalist Carol Radull who stated: "Eliud Kipchoge does not break the 2 hour mark for marathon but achieves an amazing 2.00.23 Absolutely phenomenal!"
