Kidero to Spend Sh558 Million for Mkokoteni, Wheelbarrow Users

Nairobi County Government has reportedly set aside Sh558 Million to improve pedestrian infrastructure including constructing lanes for mikokoteni, wheelchair and wheelbarrow users in an effort to enhance road safety and minimize accidents.

According to County Chief Officer for roads, transport and public works, Christine Ogut, the decision was made to ensure that there was appropriate walkways and bicycle lanes to improve safety.

She complained over the current transport system terming it as vehicle-based only.

“We want to ensure we have appropriate walkways and bicycle lanes to improve safety...The transport system is basically road-based for vehicles,” said Ms Ogut.

Ogut further raised concerns over encroachment of public walkway zones and the poor state of the county roads as reported by Nairobi News.

A few weeks ago, Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK) launched public campaigns against Hilton and Sarova Stanley hotel demanding them to unblock pedestrian walkways at their frontage that were locking out pedestrians.

COFEK complained that the two hotels had encroached on public land hindering city residents' movement. They urged consumers to boycott visiting the hotels vowing to fight for the rights of road users.
