Kidero Government Stops Sonko's Campaign

The Nairobi County Government has reportedly ordered the removal of Senator Mike Sonko billboards erected along major highways in the City.

In a letter dated 21st March 2016, the Nairobi County Government stated that the billboards had illegally used emblems of the County and demanded they be pulled down within 12 hours

“The County Government is gravely concerned at the misuse and/or abuse of the County Government's official Emblems on the adverts. Just in case it escaped attention, the use of the county official emblems on such advertisement without the authority approval of the county government is an offence under the National Flag Emblems and Names Act and section 5 of the Nairobi City County Flag and other Symbols Act, 2013,” the statement read in part.

The Capital's Government further condemned the advertisement, stating that it contained misleading information as it was a campaign urging Kenyans to apply for voter's card, yet at the same time publicised the Senator's political interest in the Governor's seat.

"Morever, the said advertisement contains a misleading message to the public as it purports to associate Senator Sonko's campaign with the Governor's office," the letter stated.

The warning, which was sent to the company behind the display, noted that if it did not get rid of the billboards, then the County Government would take up the task.

"You are required to immediately pull down the adverts now dotting various roads within the city within the next 12 hours. If you fail to comply, the County Government will proceed and remove them without reference to you and bill you for the cost of such removal," the circular indicated.
