Kisumu MCAs Attacked by Youth Over Failure to Help Raila in Voter Registration Drive

Kisumu Members of County Assembly (MCAs) were on Thursday attacked by rowdy youth accusing them of abandoning ODM leader Raila Odinga in the on-going voter registration exercise.

The youth stormed the County Assembly offices and asked the lawmakers what they were doing to help in mobilising people to register in the County.

"If Raila can move around and across the counties to mobilise residents yet some of our elected leaders are sleeping, we will not accept this," Kisumu Bus Park association Chairman Okak Owiny stated.

Mr Owiny questioned how the Kisumu MCAs could go on a bonding retreat in Arusha where they spent Sh15 Million while other leaders in the Orange Party were helping in the voter registration in Raila’s strongholds.

“We are giving them a red card and if they don't do this for the remaining ten days, they should be prepared for what is to come," he warned.

There have been concerns over the low turnout of people registering in Kisumu and the whole of Nyanza region, an area perceived to be a key stronghold of Mr Odinga.

The situation compelled ODM chairman John Mbadi to announce on Wednesday that the Orange party had formed Ward Committees help to mobilise their supporters in Nyanza and other key strongholds to turn out and register.

"We have observed that the numbers are not so good and that is why we are resorting to the ward committees to help with the mobilisation process.

"We have looked at the strategies that we have been adopting and we believe that this strategy will help increase the number of people registering as voters," Mr Mbadi said.
