KMPDU Secretary-General Ouma Oluga Sends Message to Governemnt After Getting Out of Kamiti Prison

Minutes after KMPDU Secretary-General Ouma Oluga was released from Kamiti Prison, he sent a brazen message to the Government.

Speaking outside the prison, Mr Oluga blatantly told the President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration that he would not relent in fighting for the rights of the doctors even after spending two days in jail.

The doctors union secretary-general firmly stated that the medics would not accept anything less than the 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

"It is impossible to break our resolve. It is time the government knew that we need a solution. That solution is based on the CBA," Olunga said.

Mr Oluga sharply criticised Health CS Cleopa Mailu and his PS Nicholas Muraguri for lack of leadership in the health sector adding that they must step up.

"It is unfortunate that the minister, the PS and Cabinet can be comfortably going about their business when Kenyans cannot access healthcare. They have no sympathy for the people they claim to represent," Oluga said.

At the same time, KMPDU Chairman Samuel Oroko noted that they would even carry out a referendum, if need be, in order to bring in Kenyans to help them.

"Even if it means doing a referendum, we are going to initiate the referendum. We are going to draft a petition to be signed by Kenyans. We need 1 million signatures, we shall get within three days and have centralised management of human resources for health." Oroko mentioned.

Narrating their predicament behind bars, Oluga and KMPDU Treasurer Daisy Korir divulged that they were assigned to work at the dispensaries of their respective prisons.

The KMPDU officials were on Monday thrown in jail for contempt of court. However, on Wednesday the Court of Appeal ordered their release following an application led by CORD affiliated lawyers.

The doctors' have been on strike for over two months now following a disagreement with the government on the 2013 CBA.
