The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) on Saturday issued a warning stating that they will go on strike next month if the government failed to employ all trained and qualified teachers.
Speaking at Koibeyon Secondary School in Bomet, KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion stated that the union expected the government to at least budget Sh18 Billion for the hiring of more than 90,000 trained teachers as opposed to its budget of Sh2 Billion to hire 5,000 teachers.
“It is foolhardy for the government to train teachers using public money and fail to utilise them,” Mr Sossion lamented.
He warned that the government should expect a major strike if only 5,000 teachers are recruited as earlier indicated in this year’s national budget.
The outspoken union leader further indicated that it didn't make sense for the government to always talk about its commitment in improving the education sector yet it was not ready to employ enough tutors.
Sossion further alluded that the union would not only involve their members in the strike but also request the public to join them in the strike because it was their children who would suffer from the government's failure to employ enough teachers.
