Legislators Pile Pressure on Jubilee to Use Smart Cards in Nominations

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party is facing a looming crisis after some party members demanded the use of smart cards in their upcoming nominations.

A Jubilee legislator from Meru County insisted that the party should proceed with its initial plan to use smart cards in the forthcoming primaries.

Imenti North Member of Parliament Rahim Dawood argued that the initiative had already been agreed upon and aspirants had already spent a lot of money in the cards, so withdrawing the cards now would disenfranchise them.

The MP also noted that the Jubilee Secretariat should refund all aspirants the money they had used in purchasing the cards if the iniative would be abolished as earlier stated.

The legislator’s outcry comes a few days after the Jubilee National Elections Board announced that the party had abandoned the use of smart cards in favour of the members register.

The new structure in place would now require all aspirants to marshal their supporters to register as party members in order to participate in the upcoming party primaries.

The matter if not amicably resolved could see a major fall out in the President’s party as many contestants have expressed fears over nominations.
