Jane Anyango Adika, popularly known as Mama Sirkal, has been appointed Kisumu County flood Preparedness Ambassador to help in negating the effects of El Nino rains in the County.
Ms Adika who came to the limelight in 2011, while pleading with the government to come to her rescue after she was rendered homeless by floods, was appointed because of being a constant victim of floods at Kano Plains.
"We have taken this initiative to ensure that the people get the information on floods from a simple perspective and a familiar face," said Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma.
The County which has already started experiencing heavy rains, set aside Sh70 Million for the mitigation process that is set to commence after Ms Adika completes her training on disaster preparedness.
Aside from 2011, Ms Adika was also affected by the 2012 April floods and pleaded again for help from the government, after allegedly losing her property and could not trace her children and husband for the second time in two years.
Her manner of addressing the government amused Kenyans despite the extent of damage sustained in the village.
She has since featured in a Safaricom commercial and also received the attention of Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa who visited her home, to assess the level of preparedness in the county ahead of El Nino.
