Man Behind Lamu Massacre Sentenced to Death

A man who confessed to have participated in the massacre that saw at least 65 people die in Lamu last year has been sent to the gallows.

Gituge Ngamau who started out as a Mungiki member and later converted into Islam trained with Al Shabaab and is said to have committed the crime alongside British Jihadist Thomas Evans.

He testified that he killed 12 of the people who died in Lamu.

Ngamau was arrested on July 17, last year at an Internally Displaced Persons’ camp in Hindi- Lamu.

He had stolen the phone of a resident at the camp, who later identified Ngamau to the police.

His trial has been ongoing for approximately a year during which he testified against other participants in the mass killings.

To protect him from being harmed by other suspects detained on similar charges, the police kept Ngamau in solitary confinement at Railway Police Station in Mombasa for the whole year.

In his testimony, Ngamau revealed that two white jihadists were involved in the planning and the actual massacre.

Police believe the two to be German jihadist Andreas Mueller alias Abu Nusaibah and Thomas Evans, The Standard reports.

Evans was killed this year by Kenyan troops when he, in the company of other of Al Shabaab militants attacked a Kenya Defense Forces base in Lamu.
