A man was on Thursday arraigned in court after he was arrested claiming to possess a letter with details of killers of the late businessman Jacob Juma.
Douglas Nyakundi was accused of attempted extortion after allegedly submitting the letter to activist Boniface Mwangi and demanding money before exposing the details.
Nyakundi, who claimed to be a messenger working as a spy in the Office of Deputy President William Ruto, claimed to have been sent by a senior official in Ruto's office identified as Mr Rono.
According to the prosecution, the suspect promised to furnish Mwangi with exclusive details of how the murder was planned and executed, adding that he would even introduce the activist to the purported killers.
Additionally, Nyakundi reportedly claimed to have more information regarding another plot to kill Mwangi through a staged accident.
He, however, asked the photojournalist, who recently declared interest in the Starehe parliamentary seat, to deposit an undisclosed amount of money in his account so that he could expose the plan.
He had also promised to act as a key witness in a case where the activist has been sued by DP Ruto for defamation, claiming that his evidence would be crucial in helping Mwangi.
On doubting the suspect, Mwangi recorded the phone conversation with the alleged spy which eventually led to his arrest.
Appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Teresiah Nyangena, the police sought to detain the suspect for four days to complete investigations including ascertaining whether Nyakundi and Rono worked in the DP's office.
Juma's lifeless body was discovered in his car in May along Ngong Road in a murder case that elicited outrage across the country.
