Man Jumps from Likoni Ferry into Ocean Over Love

A 20-year old man plunged into the Indian Ocean while crossing the Likoni Channel in a ferry from South Coast to Mombasa Island.

The man identified as Rufus Kamau reportedly jumped off the crammed MV Nyayo ferry after his wife allegedly dumped him.

It is said that while diving Kamau was yelling: “bibi amenitoroka (my wife has left me).

Divers on site immediately responded and rescued Kamau who was helplessly gasping for air as he had gulped a lot of water.

He was then taken to a local hospital and later detained by police for attempted suicide.

According to a report by the Standard, Likoni OCPD Willy Simba stated: “Kamau tried to kill himself by jumping into the sea when MV Nyayo was midway from the island to the mainland. The man, who was stammering, kept on saying his wife had left him,”

“I cannot tell if he is mentally unstable. We will arraign him in court and if the court establishes that there is need for him to be taken to a psychiatrist, then we will take him,” Simba added.

The incident comes after a separate one in Bungoma where a 41-year-old man clung on a helicopter's skid as it lifted from the ground.

Saleh Wanjala who later jumped off the chopper suffered injuries on his hip joint, elbow and eyebrow. He was arrested and chained to his hospital bed for endangering his life.
