Manager Fired After Uhuru's Likoni Visit

Kenya Ferry Services Managing Director Hassan Musa was Wednesday ordered to leave office, due to persistent challenges faced by Likoni Ferry Services over the years.

The manager was fired a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta visited the channel and boarded one of the ferries to learn why the system was consistently rocked by problems.

“He went in and saw for himself the chaos in the ferry and the mismanagement of the coordination of human traffic and vehicles in the ferries,”said Tourism Cabinet Secretary, Najib Balala.

Mr Musa was given terminal leave, while the head of Engineering Amos Nyadero and Head of Operations Anthony Madzungu were sent on early retirement. The decisions were made after the Board of Directors convened on Wednesday at 9.30am and appointed Hakari Hamisi Gowa, current Finance Manager, as the interim Managing Director.

A source who spoke to the Star stated that after the Monday visit by President Kenyatta, CS Balala and Transport PS Wilson Irungu, they were sure consequences would follow.

"We were sure something bad would happen when the President arrived at the channel," the source said

CS Balala faulted Ferry management for infrastructure decay and incompetence in the system, saying the President left the Likoni channel disappointed.

In defence however, the Ferry Services management said it had been facing financial constraints thus the constant challenges in the sector.
