Matatu Operators Claim Losing About Sh 100M During Obama's Visit

After a three day ‘Obama weekend’, that brought business in the city to standstill, matatu operators now claim to have lost up to Sh100 million.

According to the Matatu Welfare Association chairman Dickson Mbugua, the closure of major city roads saw their businesses incur losses estimated between Sh80 to Sh100 million.

While speaking to the Business Daily, Mr Mbugua noted that the shutdown of key roads was blow to the matatu operators.

Motorists were restricted from accessing major city roads, among them Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, Waiyaki Way and the Thika Super Highway during various days of Obama’s tour in the country.

Other feeder roads were also shutdown intermittently, to allow the US President smooth passage across the city.

Network interruptions were also reported in areas where the US president was at particular times.

Normal operations, however, resumed yesterday after the US President left the country on Sunday evening.
