Matatu Operators Now Join The Call For Teachers' Pay

Over 600 matatu operators in Embu County have complained that they have incurred huge loses since the teachers strike began in August.

According to Neno SACCO founder Emilio Kathuri, the operators said that most of the motor vehicles which depended on transportation of students and teachers had since been grounded or making minimal travel.

Kathuri, who was once MP for  Manyatta, said that the teachers industrial action had in a way affected the matatu business in the area and asked for a quick solution to the matter.

“We want schools to reopen so that we can resume normal operations. Some of us rely on students, especially day-scholars on our earnings as they constitute a major market. Others have been making loses since the strike began,” said Kathuri.

The ongoing teachers' strike, which is now in its fourth week, has seen education in the public sector put on hold. Educators have stuck to their guns stating that they would not resume duty until their 50-60 per cent pay increment was implemented.

They have also declared that without the new salaries, they would not mark or supervice national examinations set to start from October 12.
