Matiang'i Orders Principals to Investigate Student Bullying in Schools

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang'i on Thursday directed all school principals to immediately probe cases of bullying in schools after a report revealed horrific harassment of Form One students at Alliance High School.

Speaking at the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic, Matiang'i ordered the teachers to investigate the incidences and take action on anyone found guilty.

A tough-talking CS expressed displeasure that students were undergoing such ordeals maintaining that the Ministry would not tolerate the behaviour.

“Time has come for anyone involved in the 'animal behaviour' to take responsibility and face the consequences. We have taken this matter seriously and will silently resolve it,” he stated.

He maintained that stakeholders were looking into the Alliance School matter in order to restore the good name of the institution.

Heart-wrenching details of bullying and torture of new students in the country's academic giant were revealed in a shocking report compiled by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Ministry of Education officers.

The revelations indicated that prefects in the Boys’ school had been mercilessly beating the students using hockey sticks and electricity cables, let alone slapping and forcing them to swim on the grass and lie on the graves of the school’s founders in the wee hours of the night.

What is worse, is that according to the report, the school’s administration was fully aware of these shocking acts where students were seriously beaten with some being left with broken hands and legs.

The heinous acts sparked anger on social media with a majority of Kenyans demanding for action to be taken against those responsible of such bestiality.
