Trouble is looming following a decision by the Ministry of Education to shut down Kenya Science College, a constituent campus of the University of Nairobi (UON).
Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi had reportedly written a letter ordering UON's management to surrender the institution located along Ngong Road for occupation by Kenya Technical Trainers College (KTTC) students.
According to a letter dated September, Matiang'i wanted KTTC, which is based in Gigiri, to be relocated to Kenya Science by December.
"Your council is required to surrender the premises and all the facilities within it to the council of KTTC with effect from December 1, 2016,” part of the missive stated.
The revelation has now raised uproar with students up in arms to protest the CS's decision to seemingly control the number of campuses owned by UON.
“The right to education is a basic right and not a favour. It is absurd and abnormal for you to say you are compressing the number of Nairobi University campuses,” the protesting students stated.
The same was reiterated by the Ombudsman's office which questioned the motive behind Matiang'i's decision, claiming that the closure would affect many Mathematics and Science teachers being trained at the institution.
The Ombudsman expressed dissent arguing that KTTC should have been moved to other technical institutions that can absorb its students and not a science college.
