MCA Leaves Work to Teach as Strike Continues

A Member of County Assembly (MCA) in Mwiki, Nairobi County has decided to save pupils of St Dominic Primary School in Kasarani from the ongoing teachers' strike by volunteering to teach them

The MCA, Isaac Ngige, who is a former pupil at the school, has been tutoring candidates for three weeks now to ensure they do not waste time.

Mr Ngige has no training as a teacher but he saw it imperative to take time from his busy schedule and tutor the candidates who are soon set to sit for their national exams.

“Before teachers made good their threat to strike, I wrongly thought that the Government would move with speed and avert it. The impasse between the two parties and the subsequent effect it would have on the children necessitated my action,” he told the Standard.

The MCA has received great support from parents and now teaches 71 pupils up from 17 whom he initially started with. Ngige has also been joined by his close friends to help him handle the huge numbers.

The ward representative's noble act was welcomed by the school's administration who allowed him to teach in the institution.

Teachers have been on strike for three weeks now and have remained resolute on their decision to not go back to work, until the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) heeds to the court's order by awarding them the 50-60 per cent pay rise.
