Memories of Nyayo Milk Revived As County Government Introduces Free Milk in Schools

Mombasa County government has introduced the free milk programme in schools at the county.

The county government says that over 20, 000 students have benefited from the initiative which has in turn reduced the number of school dropouts.

County officials say that most pupils used to miss school because of hunger.

That problem is now being eradicated as a 200ml packet of milk is distributed to each pupil in the 97 public schools of the county every week day, The Standard reports.

The initiative is similar to an initiative by the Moi administration from the 1980s and 1990s where they provided free milk to schools.

The Nyayo milk is remembered fondly as part of a host of “Nyayo” projects introduced by President Moi after he took over power.

The projects included Nyayo buses that shuttled people around the city and Nyayo tea zones that supplied Kenyan tea.
