Migori Residents 'Want Bribes' to Register as Voters

Officials of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) expressed worry after residents of Suna West Constituency, Migori County, allegedly refused to register as voters citing that they wanted to be bribed first before they could register.

IEBC Cordinator in the constituency, Neville Okumu, said more than 60% of potential voters failed to turn up, thus recording only 618 voters out of which 200 were new voters who had changed polling centres.

According to the official, Suna West had 30,341 registered voters in 2013 but was worried that the numbers may not be as high in the ongoing process. Mr Okumu further blamed leaders for not playing their role in encouraging voters thus the percieved idea of bribing for votes.

“The high number of potential voters yet to be registered should be a big worry to society as it shows huge apathy in leadership...There is lack of political goodwill by local leaders to encourage their supporters to register,” he said while speaking to the Star in Migori Town.
