Gatundu South Member of Parliament (MP), Moses Kuria, is set to spearhead a referendum campaign that seeks to reduce the economic burden on Kenyans by cutting down the salary expenditure on elected leaders.
His proposal highlighted that there was no need for Senators, Women Representatives, Nominated Members of County Assembly (MCA) and Nominated MP's as they were a waste of resources and finances.
“Punguza Mzigo aims to reduce the burden of 'Wanjiku'...because as leaders we have become a burden to the people we are supposed to be serving,” he said on NTV.
According to the MP, Kenyans are over represented in all areas and a reduction on each would serve the same purpose at a lower cost.
“We do not need 47 Governors when 16 can do the same task. We do not need 348 MPs while 200 are enough…Reducing MPs to 200 saves the exchequer close to 50 Billion per year...We have 900 nominated MCA's who consume over Sh1 Million each ...Kenya earns Sh50 Billion from tourism, that is how significant that saving would be,” read his facebook post.
Mr Kuria compared Kenya to the State of Carlifornia, which has 15 Million people with only 1 Governor and 2 Senators, yet its economy is 14 times the combined GDP of all African countries.
“In the cafeteria, you ask for milk from someone and he tells you, 'no, I am also an MP like you'...we do not even know each other,” said Mr Kuria.
The MP said that he would collect a million signatures from Kenyans after getting the go ahead from his Lawyers.
Mr Kuria who was previously taunted for being an inciter, has gained positive feedback from kenyans after he pitched his proposal on Sunday on his Facebook page.
