Mother of NYS Suspect Now Admits Owning Frozen Properties

The mother of a key suspect in the National Youth Service (NYS) scam, Charity Wangui Gethi, has finally admitted to owning some of the properties being investigated by the Assets Recovery Agency (ARA).

Ms Gethi, who is the mother of businessman Ben Gethi, changed her tune in a new application seeking the court to unfreeze her assets despite denying ownership of the properties in January.

She acknowledged being the owner of the properties supposedly bought on her behalf by one John Kago, but stated that the money used belonged to her. Mr Kago is one of the NYS's alleged beneficiaries who are also being investigated.

“Whereas it is true that I engaged John Kago, a known land agent, to find, negotiate and finalise the transactions relating to the properties using funds provided by me, it is preposterous to suggest that he bought and registered them in my name using funds embezzled from the NYS,” Ms Gethi was quoted by the Business Daily.

The business woman alongside her son, daughter and other individuals are believed to be the main beneficiaries of proceeds from the Sh791 Million scam that has escalated into a chain of accusations stretching to prominent politicians.

She now wants the court to drop her from the suit by ARA, arguing that she had no connection with the lost funds at NYS.
