MP Wants Uganda Barred From Importing Its Sugar Through Mombasa

Lugari MP Ayub Savula wants Uganda barred from importing sugar through the port of Mombasa.

Savula says he will bring a motion to parliament to that effect.

He argues that Uganda does not have enough sugar to export to Kenya therefore it might import sugar from other countries in order to facilitate the recently signed deal.

The MP added that his motion would prevent cartels from both Uganda and Kenya from taking advantage of the deal, in order to get in cheap sugar into the country.

This is the latest of the back and forth tussle between the government and some leaders, especially from Western region concerning the alleged sugar deal signed by the president during a recent state visit to Uganda.

The deal has been making headlines for the past week with the opposition claiming that the it would completely kill an already struggling sugar industry in the country.

On Thursday, CORD leaders expressed similar sentiments as the legislator.

Through a statement, the leaders said that Uganda does not have surplus sugar to export to Kenya.

They claimed that recently released figures showing that Uganda was producing enough sugar to export to Kenya were inaccurate and meant to manipulate Kenyans.

The past week has seen the jubilee government try to put to rest claims that the sugar deal is not in the best interest of Kenyans.
