This MP Will Not Vie in 2017

Kitui County Women Representative Nyiva Mwendwa, has made a major announcement regarding her next political move in the coming General Election.

The Member of Parliament announced her retirement from politics saying she would not defend her seat in 2017 in order to allow for a younger leader to succeed her.

Nyiva who was speaking during the launch of David Musila Foundation in Kitui, added that her time to leave politics had come having served in for a long duration.

"I want to declare today that I have decided to retire from active politics to do other business. I will not seek for any elective positions in the coming elections," Nyiva said.

She further added that she would now become an adviser and counsel anyone who would seek her advice in political and family matters.

The MP first set foot in Parliament in 1974 representing Kitui West Constituency and was later elected for the same post in 1992 and 2002.

The 74-year-old who is a wife to the first Kenyan Chief Justice the late Kitili Mwendwa, was again elected as the oldest women rep in the 2013 elections.

Nyiva also made headlines in 1992 when she was appointed as the first Cabinet Minister for Culture and Social Services by the then President Daniel Moi.
