MPs Share Filthy Toilets with Mathare Criminals

Politicians detained on Tuesday over hate speech allegations were forced to share filthy and dehumanising toilets with suspected criminals from Mathare slums at Pangani Police Station.

The five Members of Parliament and one Senator, got a rude shock after their request to be transferred to the 'posh' Kileleshwa station was denied by senior police officers.

They were, therefore, subjected to the same treatment as other offenders at Pangani who are mainly from Mathare slums and Eastleigh including using the smelly toilets.

An officer who sought anonymity said that Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and his Kabete counterpart Ferdinand Waititu were forced to use their shoes as pillows when it became apparent they could not be provided with soft pillows.

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, Kitutu Masaba's Timothy Bosire and Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama chose to remain with their shoes on as they slept on the cold concrete floor.

The legislators who in ordinary circumstances would enjoy a sumptuous meal, had to eat cabbage and Ugali for lunch and supper while bread and tea were served for breakfast.

The Machakos Senator's wife, Jemimah Muthama, was left in shock after officers turned her away with a change of clothes she had gone to deliver for her husband.

“He is a clean man but he is still in yesterday’s clothes. The smell in there is choking. He has not taken a shower since Tuesday,” Ms Muthama told journalists.

The same situation was replicated at the neighbouring Muthaiga police station where Kilifi Women Representative Aisha Jumwa and her Busia counterpart Florence Mutua were being detained.

Politicians who thronged the two stations on Wednesday to visit the lawmakers were disappointed after only spouses were allowed inside.

Efforts by lawyers to have the High Court release them on bail were denied with the court maintaining that the eight remain behind bars until Friday as earlier ruled.
