MPs: William Ruto Left to Fight ICC Alone

The Government has been put on the spot over what is termed as taking a back seat on the case facing Deputy President William Ruto, at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

A section of legislators from the United Republic Party (URP) on Tuesday criticized the Government, saying that it had abandoned Mr Ruto after the case against President Uhuru Kenyatta was dropped.

The URP MPs; Wilfred Lesan (Senator, Bomet), Paul Bii (Chepalungu), Bernard Bett (Bomet East) and Ronald Tonui (Bomet Central), pointed out that the Government had stopped the process to lobby against the ICC, after Kenyatta's case flopped.

They demanded that Attorney General Githu Muigai and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed carry out shuttle diplomacy to have the ICC drop Ruto's case too.

The legislators also took a swipe at the Hague-based court for allowing the use of previously recanted statements as evidence in the DP's case.

This is the latest in a series of concerns raised over the case facing Ruto.

On Sunday legislators affiliated to the Jubilee coalition, led by Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu, cautioned the DP against honouring summons at the ICC, noting that it was a plot to deny him justice.

The Deputy President is accused of being an indirect co-perpetrator for crimes against humanity during the 2007/08 post election chaos.
