Musician Nonini Angered by Death Rumours Spread by Local Blog

Popular musician Hubert Nakitare, popularly known by his stage name Nonini has come out to reassure his anxious fans who were worried by reports of his death.

The musician expressed his displeasure after a local blog falsely reported that he had died in a road accident.

An online fake news website identified as truthmeter.info distributed images of an accident scene and alleged that the Kenyan hitmaker had died along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The website had further claimed that the musician was coming out of a New Year’s eve performance in Mombasa.

On Monday, Nonini took to his Facebook page where he castigated the false information.

“And as we get into a new year still blogs coming with cheap stories to attract numbers. So Sad. Just want to confirm to my fans, family and friends that am okay and this is a hoax. Thanking God for allowing us to see another year. Blessed 2017,” the veteran rapper posted.

Fake news websites have escalated with the spread of the internet, with many of them going to great lengths to get clicks from social media users.

In August last year, popular singer Jaguar also fell victim to malicious reporting after a less-known blog sensationally reported that he had passed on following a horrific road accident along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway.

Last year, Facebook reported that it was working on a feature that will block the spread of fake news on their platforms.
