Mutahi Ngunyi Finally Charged

Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has been freed on a Sh200,000 cash bail or Sh500,000 bond after pleading not guilty to four charges of ethnic contempt.

Ngunyi was before the court on Monday, after the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko approved for his arrest and prosecution over alleged hate speech he made on social media against CORD Leader Raila Odinga and the Luo community.

The political scientist had moved to court after the DPP's directive to block his prosecution saying it was malicious and a violation of his rights, but the court declined to grant his request.

“The NCIC did not follow the right procedure in their handling of the case. They never summoned Prof Mutahi to record any statement, and whatever decision they reached to charge him is a clear case of abuse of powers,” Ngunyi's lawyer cited in the application.

Ngunyi has been under fire over his remarks against Odinga and the luo community that were deemed distateful.

He recently tweeted that the Former Prime Minister ought to be charged with 'selfishness' with the judges being the 'poverty stricken Luos and Luhyas craving his bondage'.

Ngunyi's case will be heard in January 2016.
