Muthama in New Hate Speech Case

Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama could be in trouble over another case of alleged hate speech remarks, just days after being freed in a similar case.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has written to the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) asking for immediate investigations into remarks made by Muthama on Monday.

According to the letter, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had submitted preliminary findings on the matter and recommended Muthama be charged with the offence of Ethnic Contempt.

The DPP on Tuesday directed the immediate interrogation of Muthama and speedy investigations into the 'offensive' utterances he made in Busia, during the homecoming of area Women Representative Florence Mutua.

During the rally organised by the CORD coalition, Mr Muthama commented on earlier statements made by Deputy President William Ruto who stated: "Hawa watu wa makelele hakuna mahali wanaenda. Hata niliambia rais hawa niachie nitawakaranga na kuwazungusha (These noisy people are going nowhere. I even told the President to leave them to me. I will fry and turn them around)".

DP Ruto made the remarks while advising the Opposition to cease demonstrations, noting it was not the best method to resolve the electoral reforms dispute.

In response, the Machakos Senator said: “Mimi namwambia tutamkaranga kabla hajatukaranga sisi (I'm telling him we will fry him before he fries us)", sentiments which are speculated to have sparked the probe.

Two weeks ago, the Machakos Senator was freed on bail having spent four days at Pangani Police Station over past utterances that were deemed inciteful.
