From Mutunga to Philip Moi; When Prominent Kenyans are Trapped in Messy Divorce Cases

For most people in the Kenyan society, marriage is a highly regarded institution, often the epitome of love.

Unfortunately, marriages, like most other good things in life, do not always last forever.

Here are six prominent Kenyans who have endured the pain and humiliation of an acrimonious divorce.

1. Philip Moi

The son to former President Daniel arap Moi would perhaps be living a quiet private life were it not for a messy divorce case with his Italian wife Rossana Pluda Moi.

After more than five years of trading accusations and counter-accusations that were widely reported by the media, Philip and Rossana were finally granted divorce in 2015.

Philip, a retired KDF Major, was ordered to pay Sh90 million as upkeep and housing for his former wife.

He has since been forced to seek an appeal arguing that he was unemployed and living under the care of his wealthy relatives.

2. Willy Mutunga

The reserved man of the law was forced to undergo a divorce case against his second wife Prof Beverle Michele Lax - just months after he was appointed Chief Justice.

Mutunga was forced to reveal secrets of his estranged marriage to the American scholar, including accusations of being verbally and physically abused.

3. Samuel Gichuru

What started as a simple divorce case filed by the former KPLC boss ended up putting his name on the list of wanted money launderers.

In response to the divorce, Mr Gichuru’s wife, Salome Njeri, filed affidavits showing that her husband was hiding some of his wealtH in international tax havens.

British intelligence officers used some of the affidavits to piece together a money laundering and corruption case that has forced him back to court as he seeks to fight extradition to Jersey Island.

4. Joe Mucheru

The ICT Cabinet Secretary is currently undergoing a divorce case that have lifted a lead on his rather private life.

Aida Wambui Kamau has filed a divorce against Mucheru whom she accuses of denying her conjugal rights, in addition to being cruel to her during their marriage that lasted 10 years.

5. Jackson Kibor

The 86-year old Eldoret-based politician recently made headlines as he moved to court, seeking to end his 51-year marriage with his second wife Josephine.

Jackson wants to marry a 40 year-old lady, Yunita, in Josephine's place.
