MV Nyayo Likoni Ferry Breaks Down with Passengers On-board

A dramatic scene was witnessed on Tuesday morning after the biggest and oldest ferry in Mombasa dubbed 'MV Nyayo' broke down with passengers on board and was pushed towards the deep sea by heavy tides in the Indian Ocean.

Speaking to kenyans.co.ke a worker from Kenya Ferry Services confirmed that the heavy current at the sea caused the ferry to breakdown. She, however, added that no one was hurt in the incident.

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA)were able to tow the ferry towards the island after several unsuccessful attempts.

KPA officials suspended ferry operations at Likoni and the newly-launched Mtongwe Channels following an overflow of water caused by heavy rains which left dozens of people stranded in Mombasa.

This comes a day after the Mbogololo bridge located along Mombasa-Malindi highway was swept by heavy rains.

The bridge was submerged by the water flowing below it halting passage of vehicles on the highway.

Luckily no accidents were recorded.
