Nairobi City County workers on Wednesday downed their tools bringing key services in the Capital to a standstill demanding payment of their April salaries.
The workers, through the Kenya County Government Workers Union, stated that services would not be offered in all sectors in the city until they are paid all their dues.
Led by the Union’s Nairobi Branch Chairman Bernard Inyangala, the workers gathered in front of City Hall demanding an audience with the county bosses but were not addressed.
“They told us that they are going to pay us by today but we have received nothing. They have been telling us that they will send money from yesterday but nothing has been reflected in our accounts. If it reflects and all the workers get it then we will all resume work. But as at now, all the parking is free, the markets are also free,” he declared.
The declaration by Mr Inyangalah means that:
First, City Council inspectorate officers will not be in charge of parking and as such, security of vehicles at the parking lot will not be guaranteed.
Second, traffic marshal from the county will not be at the crucial roundabouts which might lead to massive traffic snarl-ups.
Third, garbage collection within the County will not be taken care of as workers tasked with cleaning the City have also downed their tools.
The city will lack organisation brought about by the authority from the County askaris. Traders might flood the city streets and markets as they seek to take advantage of the situation.
Lastly, payment for County services like land rates, rents, and licenses will not be available as officers mandated to receive the payments have also downed their tools.
