Nairobi Restaurant Closed Over NYS Scandal

A restaurant based in Nairobi has been frozen indefinitely following an order issued by President Uhuru Kenyatta during the Mashujaa Day celebrations.

Eden Times Restaurant, located in Mercury Building along Tom Mboya Street, had its operations halted alongside other assests including a house in Rosslyn Estate, with two pieces of land at Muthaiga in Nairobi and a Range Rover Vogue also being frozen.

President Kenyatta ordered for immediate action on the properties suspected to have been purchased using money stolen from the National Youth Service (NYS).

Speaking at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday, Kenyatta condemned corruption and declared that property acquired through fishy means would ultimately be forfeited.

The President stated that a preservation order which was gazetted on Friday, barred any of the listed properties from being transferred, mortgaged, attached or disposed.

“The property will be held until all relevant legal matters are concluded,” the President announced.

The holdings are reportedly owned by some of the suspects implicated in the NYS scam including; Josephine Kabura Irungu, Ben Gethi, Charity Wangui Gethi, Jedidah Wangari Wangui, John Kago Ndung’u, Sam K Mwadime, Patrick Onyango Ogola and Martin Muthoni Gitonga.

The order to freeze the assets was obtained from the High Court by Director of Anti-Money Laundering Authority, Muthoni Kimani, under the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act.

The NYS scandal has seen the apprehension and sacking of senior Government officials besides subsequent resignation of former Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru.
