NASA Meets with IEBC to Discuss Preparations of August 8 General Election

National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders on Thursday held a private meeting with the IEBC during which they discussed a number of issues.

Led by ODM leader Raila Odinga and IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati, the two groups engaged on issues regarding the preparedness of the August 8 General Election.

The NASA team had been invited to an urgent meeting with the polls body after announcing that it would set up a parallel tallying centre during the Election and announce its results.

During the meeting, the leaders agreed;

1. That political parties and the media would be allowed to tally and monitor results but only IEBC would announce and declare the winners.

2. They also agreed that the polls body would consult and communicate regarding ODM nominations set to commence on Friday, which the IEBC had declared illegal.

3. They also discussed the ongoing voter register audit and concurred that KMPG, which is conducting the audit, would consult with all stakeholders during the process.

4. Both NASA and the Commission condemned all acts of electoral violence adding that all parties including state agencies should encourage Kenyans to desist from actions that might cause violence.

5. That political parties shall deploy agents in polling stations in accordance with the law.

6. That NASA is open to participation in a National Elections Conference scheduled by the IEBC for June with a view to further laying the ground for free, fair and verifiable elections in August.

7. That NASA shall participate fully in the Political Parties Consultative Forum, an initiative set up by IEBC to facilitate regular engagement between the polls body and political parties.

8. The parties also expressed commitment to transparent acquisition and deployment of electoral technology.

9. They also agreed that a technical committee to oversee the implementation of technology would start its meetings from next week.

Others present during the deliberations were NASA co-principals Moses Wetangula, Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka and IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba.
