New Teachers to Continue Working Despite Court Order

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Nancy Macharia has instructed all teachers who were recently recruited, to fill in for the striking teachers, to continue working in their allocated schools.

The teachers who were hired on a contract basis received their letters of appointment just days before Employment and Labour Relations court halted the exercise.

Speaking before the National Assembly Committee on Education, Macharia gave hopes to the 70,000 teachers saying that they would be considered first once permanent vacancies arose.

TSC had advertised the decision to recruit 50,000 primary and 20,000 secondary school teachers on a three-month contract before the move was contested in the Labour court.

She downplayed the claim that the teachers were hired due to the recent strike, saying that the step followed the need to cover the teachers' shortage in the country.

The recently hired teachers were left in dilemma concerning the situation of their appointment, after KNUT and KUPPET announced an end to the five-week strike that had paralyzed learning in public institutions.
