Court Stops Hiring of 70,000 Teachers

The Employment and Labour Relations Court has barred the hiring of 70,000 teachers by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The order made on Friday, by Justice Nduma Nderi, followed the filing of an application by the Trade Union Congress of Kenya challenging the recruitment.

The Teachers Service Commission on Wednesday announced that it would be hiring 70,000 teachers on a three month contract amid the ongoing teachers' strike.

In a statement, TSC said that it would seek services of  50,000 teachers for primary schools and 20,000 others for secondary schools to curb the effects of the current industrial action.

Eligible persons were supposed to have submitted the applications not later than 5th October 2015.

The recruitment process had already commenced in various parts of the country.

The announcement by TSC followed the teachers' unions dismissal of the industrial court's ruling to suspend the strike for 90 days and hold conciliatory meetings with stakeholders so as to reach an agreement.

The teachers' employer yesterday released the September payroll, which indicated that over 245,000 teachers will miss their September salaries.

According to the TSC, only 42, 973 teachers will receive their pay.

Majority of teachers who are set to get their salaries are the principals, their deputies and heads of department who were in schools despite the nationwide industrial action.
