NGO Founder Arrested Over Sick Child's Donation Funds

The founder of a Non Governmental Organisation - Hope Foundation - has been arrested by the police for allegedly declining to release the Sh2.8 million donation money.

Benson Wanjau was on Thursday arrested at ABC Place in Westlands, Nairobi and taken to Muthangari Police Station. CID Director Ndegwa Muhoro is expected to take up the case.

The man had been accused of running away with funds meant to cater for a young baby's operation.

Murang'a county Police Commander Naomi Ichami said Wanjau's three bank accounts were frozen amid the hunt for him.

Naomi noted that the all accounts belonging to Wanjau had been frozen. They include; M-Pesa, Equity Bank, and the paybill account number used to raise money for baby Fidelis Muthoni.

The investigator said the baby needed Sh700,000 only.  Muthoni was due for free surgery in Canada on Tuesday if the family could afford air tickets.

Ichami says that at the time the accounts were being frozen, the Equity account had Sh173,000, while the active M-Pesa account was empty.

“The paybill account number transcripts that we got from Safaricom indicated that Sh2.8 million had been deposited into the account and later withdrawn,” said Muthoni's father, Kenneth Kinuthia.

Wanjau had allegedly been given Sh155,000 to deposit into the girl's parents account. He also opened paybill account number 317081 and posted Fidelis's picture on Social Media, to raise more funds.

He apologised for being unreachable by phone saying, "I couldn't handle the overwhelming calls after the allegations were published on the media."
