Members of County Assembly (MCAs) in Nyeri on Monday flew to Mombasa despite President Uhuru Kenyatta being in the region.
The MCAs left for the seven-day trip said to cost the County close to Sh9 Million just a day after Kenyatta set foot in the County for a two-day tour.
According to sources, the Ward-Representatives had been allocated Sh38,000 in air tickets and would each be receiving a daily allowance of Sh14,000.
Speaking on the matter, Majority leader in the Assembly Duncan Gituanja, explained that the MCAs would be discussing five pending Bills.
“We will also be discussing the annual development plan which is a statutory document in the budget making process. We do not have much time but we will make use of what we have,” he promised.
Mr Gituanja stated that the representatives had to fly out of Nyeri since they would be distracted if they decided to hold the discussions in the County.
“If we have to do anything meaningful, the MCAs must be away from Nyeri. Otherwise nothing substantial will come out of those meetings,” Gituanja, who is also Kabaru MCA added.
The local leaders defended the trip asserting that it had been factored in this year's budget and did not amount to wastage of public funds.
President Kenyatta has been traversing the Central Kenya region for the better part of the weekend while launching development projects in the company of area leaders.
