Nyeri MCAs Refuse to Attend Governor Nderitu Gachagua's Burial Over Death Threats

A group of Nyeri MCAs on Thursday stated that they would not attend the burial of County Governor Nderitu Gachagua following alleged death threat messages sent to them on social media.

The ward representatives, who were at loggerheads with Mr Gachagua before his sudden demise, claimed that they did not feel safe to attend the burial scheduled for Monday.

Through Majority Leader Duncan Gituanja, the politicians sent an apology to President Uhuru Kenyatta explaining their expected absence from the ceremony.

"We had planned to attend the burial but not anymore given the social media threats. We were recently told that our condolence messages were not accepted yet they were sincere,” Gituanja said.

Gituanja added: "The security apparatus in the county has not assured us of security. We feel [that] since we do not own guns we cannot afford to take that risk."

Gikondi MCA blamed Gachagua's brother and Mathira parliamentary aspirant, Rigathi Gachagua, of seeking political mileage with the Governor's death.

"He wants to play politics with the brother’s death and we can see a lot of malice yet the members are very willing to work with the new governor," Kahiga stated.

The ward reps sharply criticised Mr Rigathi, who earlier dismissed their condolences highlighting that they were not sincere but rather happy that his brother had died.

Mr Gachagua died on February 24, while receiving treatment at a hospital in London.
