ODM Leader Punished After Chaotic Protests

The Orange Democratic Movement has taken disciplinary action against its National Youth leader for "gross misconduct".

Rashid Mohamed was suspended by the party after he led counter anti-IEBC demonstrations in Kakamega.

A statement from the Party's Executive Director Oduor Ong'wen highlighted that Mr Mohamed was restricted from communicating on behalf of the ODM Youth league.

"Mohammed was effectively suspended from the ODM Youth League and subsequently replaced with John Ketora in an acting capacity," Mr Ong'wen was quoted by the Standard.

On the other hand, Mohamed said he was not aware of the suspension.

The anti-IEBC protests by the Opposition turned bloody on Monday after police allegedly shot 13 people countrywide.

During the protests, Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale was arrested in Kakamega after taking a lead role. He was charged with rioting and defying a court order that had barred the protests but was later released on a sh100,000 cash bail.

Meanwhile, CORD announced on Wednesday a temporary suspension of its weekly demonstrations against IEBC to allow for dialogue.

Siaya Senator James Orengo and his Machakos counterpart Johnson Muthama indicated that the Opposition had given the government until June 5 to respond to the dialogue calls.

The coalition added that if the government failed to positively respond to its appeal for structured talks, the protests would resume every Monday as witnessed in the last four weeks.
