ODM MPs Jump into Nairobi University Chaos

Two Members of Parliament of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) on Tuesday weighed in on the chaotic scenes at the University of Nairobi (UoN), demanding for immediate action from the government.

It is reported that the lawmakers Simba Arati and Opiyo Wandayi went to the University to calm the students' protests that had already damage property along some of the major roads in the city.

The Opposition MPs, who whistled down President Uhuru Kenyatta during the State of the Nation Address, were allegedly in the meeting which announced the closure of all UoN campuses.

At the same time, ODM called for the punishment of the General Service Unit officers caught on camera clobbering University of Nairobi students after a series of protests in the Campus.

In a statement, ODM Deputy Party Leader Hassan Joho demanded for accountability over the brutality on the students that was mainly depicted through pictures and videos on social media.

“As a party, we wish to express our deep concern over this use of violence on students who had practically surrendered. We condemn this use of lawlessness in the name of maintaining law and order," the statement read in part.

Joho questioned the wisdom of deploying heavy military equipment and vehicles on a situation that seemed to be an 'ordinary civilian mission'.

"This brutality meted out on students is part of the growing militarization of our country in which police and other security agencies are unleashed in full force on the public at the slightest excuse," the Opposition party stated.

The incident was sharply criticised by a section of the public who stated that it was an unnecessary assault on the students.

However, Nairobi County Police Commander Japhet Koome said that the clip was uploaded by bloggers to discredit the police.

They further highlighted in a statement that: “There is absolutely no conflict between the police and the students. So far, no victim has reported to the police to claim he or she was assaulted”.

The University on Tuesday closed all the campuses following the rampant demonstrations by students over what they termed as compromised elections.
