University of Nairobi Closed After Chaos

The University of Nairobi (UoN) has been closed indefinitely following the rampant demonstrations by students over what they termed as compromised elections.

A special committee formed to interrogate the matter on Tuesday instructed the budding scholars to vacate the Campus before 5pm.

The move to shut down all UoN campuses comes barely a week before the learners sit for their end of semester examinations.

The angry students have been on a rampage since Saurday when Paul Ongili, commonly known as Babu Owino, was sworn in as the chairman of Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU).

They claimed that Babu rigged the elections with a section of them being captured on tape stating that they were tired of being led by him.

The riots went a notch higher on Monday, when the enraged learners razed down SONU offices located along University Way.

On Tuesday, a video surfaced on social media showing some of the students paraded on the campus' streets by officers of the General Service Unit (GSU) who then clobber them repeatedly.

The clip angered a section of the public who condemned the brutal way in which the officers handled the students.

However, Nairobi County Police Commander Japhet Koome said that the clip was uploaded by bloggers to discredit the police.

They further highlighted in a statement that: “There is absolutely no conflict between the police and the students. So far, no victim has reported to the police to claim he or she was assaulted”.

Amid the chaos, Babu has maintaned that he won the elections and went ahead to call for peace at the Campus urging his opponents to accept the results and move on.
