Several Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) officials are nursing injuries after being brutally beaten by a section of the party supporters in Migori County.
The officials are said to have been undergoing a training session at the St John’s Seminary Rakwaro Catholic Church for the nominations slated for Monday when they were attacked by rowdy youth.
According to the victims most of who were presiding officers, the group was ferried in three pickups and was armed with machetes and clubs.
The violent supporters accused the officials of planning to rig the polls which were postponed from Friday to Monday.
The officers were rescued by area residents who drove away the youth who left behind a trail of destruction. They were later rushed to different hospitals where they were treated.
“The female teachers in our midst raised distress calls, prompting villagers to come to our rescue. The gang later left the venue after smashing doors and windows of the church,” divulged one of the victims.
Confirming the incident, Migori Police Commander David Kirui affirmed that at least 20 suspects had been apprehended with some of the weapons used in the attack.
The county boss assured that enough security officers would be deployed ahead of the nominations to ensure the will of the people is allowed to prevail.
