ODM Orders Government to Stop Harassing Opposition Leaders

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has exposed two reasons which it states has led to frequent “harassment” of Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho.

In a statement issued by acting Secretary General Agnes Zani, the Governor's troubles began when he refused to lead a mass movement of Coastal leaders into joining Jubilee.

First, Zani noted that it was an open secret that the government had attempted to woo the bold-speaking Joho but he declined the offer.

“It is an open secret that Governor Joho’s woes began the day he rejected overtures by the government and their agencies to lead a mass defection from the opposition to Jubilee,” read part of the statement.

More to that, the nominated Senator added that Joho has been “subject to intimidation and humiliation” because of the support he enjoys in the Coastal area and his firm stand in defence of his electorate.

“Joho commands massive support among the people of the Coast for his bravery to stand against Jubilee lies and propaganda has made him an enemy of the State hence the harassment,” she revealed.

The Party has now ordered that the government stops the harassment of Opposition leaders and embrace the tenets of competition.

Joho, on Friday evening, claimed to have been arrested alongside other area MPs as they sought the release of an ally who had earlier been apprehended.

However, Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa refuted the claims inferring that the Governor visited the police station and declined to leave and later alleged to have been detained.
