Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Hires 105 Prosecutors to Monitor Election Offences

The government through the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has hired 105 prosecutors, who will form a task force that will be in charge of electoral offences, hate speech and incitement during the election period.

DPP Keriako Tobiko also assured members of the public that his office was putting in place a framework that would effectively detect, investigate and timely prosecute all election offences.

"The DPP assures members of the public that his office has put in place election preparedness measures aimed at ensuring that all cases of criminal nature will be dealt with effectively and suspects brought to account to ensure a secure environment for a free, fair and peaceful election," stated his statement

Mr Tobiko further indicated that they had charged 62 people with election-related offences in the just concluded party nominations including a gubernatorial aspirant, Member of Parliament (MP) and two sitting Members of County Assembly (MCAs). 

The said individuals are facing charges that include unauthorised possession of election material, damage of election material, bribery of voters, unauthorised entry into election centers and, malicious damage to property.

"Already one person has been convicted and fined Sh50,000 or three months imprisonment by a Nanyuki court for creating disturbance during Jubilee Party nominations last week," he emphasied 

He further urged politicians to abide by the law and ensure they don't incite the public and warned them that those who will be going against the law will be apprehended and face the law.
