Parents Now Issue Their Demands As Strike Continues

The Kenya National Association of Parents is now seeking the postponement of national examinations for both primary and secondary schools, following the teachers' strike which is now in its third week.

KNAP Chairman Musau Ndunda made the remarks on Monday demanding that school fees for this term be refunded since the school term had not officially began.

Despite these calls, the government has adamantly in the past insisted that the examinations would proceed as scheduled.

Senior Director of Public Communication at State House Munyori Buku on Sunday, urged parents to take their children to school despite teachers firmly stating that they would not resume duty until their pay increment awarded by the court is effected.

Joining the parents call to postpone the national examinations the Orange Democratic Movement(ODM) part, on Sunday stated that having the exams go on as scheduled would be unfair to students in public institutions.

“This is unacceptable and we in ODM demand categorically that unless the impasse is resolved, both Standard Eight and Form Four national examinations be postponed,” ODM chair John Mbadi said.

Mbadi also reiterated his party's earlier stance saying ODM was in full support of the ongoing teachers' strike adding that the government claims of not having money to pay teachers was unfortunate.

Quarters that support teachers getting their pay hike have urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to respect the Supreme Court's decision that upheld an earlier ruling by the labour court which granted teachers a 50-60 percent pay rise.

The unions representing teachers are also on record insisting that their salaries are not in harmony with that of other civil servants, a matter that the government disagrees arguing that all public officers salaries were harmonized in 2009.

Meanwhile, the court is expected on Tuesday to make a ruling that would determine the legality of the teachers' industrial action.
